Kings House, Christian Outreach College Toowoomba

An independent private school in Toowoomba required the extension and modernisation of its science learning areas.  A lack of ‘green space’ available on the site meant that the proposed new classrooms needed to be created through the addition of a second storey to the existing Kings House building.

This new building exhibits considerable sustainable qualities.  It has made use of materials sourced from the existing building including timber roof trusses, windows, and furniture systems, combined with the selection of new materials having whole of life low maintenance qualities with energy efficiency a key design philosophy. No mechanical air conditioning was used; rather natural light and ventilation was maximised.

Our project management role required extensive planning as the construction adjoined occupied classrooms.  The building was delivered on time with minimal variations.

The new science building integrates seamlessly into the built fabric of the surrounding campus whilst also providing an ultra modern, state of the art learning facility.  The internal layout provides functional teacher and student zones that include laptop docking facilities at the learning benches.  The two storey project meant the introduction of a goods lift to transport the science materials between floors from storage zones to fume cupboards / classrooms.

This design was awarded two 2009 BDAQ regional design awards along with the 2009 state award for “Environmentally Sustainable and Energy Efficient Commercial Building”.
