What is a Building Designer?

What do you need to know?

There are many different pathways to becoming a Building Designer. To become what is considered a licenced Building Designer, you will need to first complete tertiary studies and then apply for the QBCC Licence. Whilst you are completing your studies, you may find it beneficial to seek work experience or part-time employment with a local Design firm.
Pathways to becoming a Building Designer.

If you are not interested in becoming a licenced Building Designer, you do not have to complete tertiary studies at all to join the industry workforce. You can start by approaching a local Design firm to begin work straight out of school, learning the tools of the trade directly from the source.

The majority of the StruXi team are all working full-time while completing their tertiary studies. They are utilising our Senior Design staff as mentors to learn and get guidance from, not only in the work environment but all for their assessments.

Building Design Queensland (BDQ) also have a mentoring program that can be utilised by any of its student members throughout the duration of their studies. Through this program, you approach one of the mentors listed and seek their interest in mentorship. You can rely on your mentor to assist with your assessments, industry knowledge and contacts, work experience throughout your studies and expert guidance on the pathway to industry success.

What do you need to study in school?

There are no requirements on subjects that you must study to become a building designer. However, there are a few that will assist in providing you with the basic technical skills to start with. These are Graphics, Art, Maths, and English. Other subjects that may help with basic people and business skills are Business, and Psychology.

Other Opportunites

If you decide that you love working in the industry but becoming a ‘Building Designer’ is not for you, there are many other pathways that your degree can take you. You can take on a contracts or pre-job role within a building design firm, you can work as a design manager or consultant for a builder, a landscape designer, acoustic consultant, interior design, building certifier, supplier rep, etc.
